Supporting Our Tāngata

At Te Roopu Taurima, we are guided by key principles that shape how we provide care and support for tāngata (clients) with intellectual impairments. These principles ensure we deliver culturally aligned and person-centred services.

Tāngata-Centredness:

We ensure tāngata are at the heart of all decisions, focusing on their personal needs, strengths, and choices to support them in living fulfilling lives.

Tāngata Choice:

Our services revolve around enabling tāngata to have as much choice and control over their lives as possible. Supported decision-making empowers tāngata to take ownership of their choices, with the appropriate level of assistance.

Kaupapa Māori Principles:

  • Tino Rangatiratanga – Self-determination for Māori
  • Taonga Tuku Iho – Māori ways of knowing and doing are valid
  • Ako Māori – Teaching and learning practices grounded in Māori traditions
  • Whānau – The importance of relationships and responsibilities within family
  • Te Tiriti o Waitangi – A guiding principle for understanding Māori rights and relationships

These kaupapa Māori principles reflect our commitment to providing services that respect and uphold Māori culture and values, while ensuring that tāngata have the best quality of life possible.
